
Mercer Welcomes Western Carolina, Samford To Hawkins

MACON, Ga. - The Mercer volleyball team welcomes fellow Southern Conference members, Western Carolina and Samford to close out the first half of Southern Conference Slate on Friday, October. 17 and Saturday, October. 18 inside Hawkins Arena.Â
Mercer is coming off of a tough weekend on the road against Wofford and UNC Greensboro. The Bears fell 0-3 against the Terriers and took a set from the Spartans but ultimately fell 1-3. Sophomore outside hitter Sophia Henry led the offense with 27 kills (3.86/set), including a season-high 17 kills against UNCG, along with three service aces, and 17 digs. Sophomore setter Sammi Bergjans posted 46 assists (6.57/set) and seven digs across two games. Sophomore libero Aubri Martin led the defense with 43 digs, five service aces and 10 assists.Â
Western Carolina currently sits at sixth in the conference with an overall record of 6-11 and a SoCon record of 2-4. The Catamounts defeated The Citadel 3-0 to open up conference play and then took down UNCG 3-1 on Oct. 4 in Cullowhee, N.C. Western Carolina also took Chattanooga to five sets but the Mocs were able to come away with the win.
Samford sits below Mercer and above The Citadel in the conference standings with an overall record of 6-11 and a SoCon record of 1-5. The Bulldogs' lone conference win came against Western Carolina 3-0 on Oct. 10 in Cullowhee.
First serve for both matches is set for 6 p.m. and will not be streamed on ESPN+. Friday's match against Western Carolina is Mercer's Dig Pink game in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Complimentary ribbons, bracelets and stickers will be handed out at the door along with chances to donate to the Play4Kay Cancer Fund throughout the match. Don't forget to wear pink!
