Farr scored in the 77th minute
CHARLESTON, S.C. – Sydney Farr broke open a scoreless game with a goal in the 77th minute to help the Mercer Bears to a 1-0 win at The Citadel Sunday afternoon from Charleston, South Carolina.
The win improves Mercer's conference record to 3-3-2 with one game to play in the regular season.Â
The Bears led in shots, 10-6, including a 6-3 shots on goal advantage. Avery Parker and Lindsay Bell each played one half in goal to earn the combined shutout.
Each team had a few decent scoring chances in the first half, but both teams played well defensively and each goalie stood up to the task to make a few saves to keep the game scoreless after the first 45 minutes.
The Bears came out strong to start the second half, controlling the ball and creating numerous quality scoring chances, but The Citadel's goalie continued to make key saves to keep the Bears off the scoreboard.
In the 77th minute, after a Mercer free kick, The Citadel's attempted clearance found the foot of Maggie Rollins who controlled the ball 10 yards from the center line. Rollins picked up her head and played a perfectly lofted ball over The Citadel's back line where Farr ran onto the ball and chipped the Bulldogs' goalie who came off her line and the ball took one bounce and went into the back of the net.
The Bears protected their one-goal lead for the final 13 minutes to earn the conference win and three important points on the road.
