Zarazua, Akli/Cayetano Capture Mercer Tennis Classic Crowns

MACON – Top-seeded Renata Zarazua completed an unblemished run through the singles draw with a straight-sets victory in the championship match, while the tandem of Ayana Akli and Eryn Cayetano won a marathon third-set tiebreaker in the doubles championship, to cap action at the Mercer Tennis Classic on Sunday.

Zarazua yielded just 20 games across six matches across the week-long tournament at the John Drew Smith Tennis Center, including a 6-2, 6-1 straight-sets win over Anna Rogers on Sunday in north Macon. That run included straight-sets victories over eighth-seeded Olivia Gadecki and fourth-seeded Emerson Jones in the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds, respectively.

Akli and Cayetano dropped a first-set tiebreaker to Rasheeda McAdoo and Angella Okutovi before knotting things up with a dominant 6-2 win in the second set. McAdoo/Okutovi scratched their way back from a 7-3 deficit in the third-set tiebreaker, but Akli/Cayetano was able to fight off any more rallies after that before exiting with a 16-14 decision.
