Bears Compete At Mercer Gridiron Classic To Open Fall Season

MACON, Ga. -Â The Mercer women's tennis team opened its fall season over the weekend by hosting the Mercer Gridiron Classic at the Randy Stephens Tennis Center.
In doubles play, Marina de Diego Quinones and Marie Bannmeyer went 4-0 on the way to winning their doubles flight. In the championship match on Sunday, de Diego Quinones and Bannmeyer defeated Troy's Valeriia Avdeeva and Maria Guirguis, 6-4.
In singles action, Bannmeyer continued her stellar play as she went 3-0 on her way to reaching the championship match. Tea Zivic went 2-1 in her singles flight with wins over Florida Southern's Ronja Scheuermann and Troy's Valeriia Avdeeva.
Ines Homberg and Jelena Gojkovic each won their first singles match before dropping their quarterfinals match on Saturday. In the first round, Homberg defeated Middle Georgia State's Berta Castello, 6-3, 6-0 and Gojkovic defeated Kennesaw State's Che Nel, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Next up for the Bears is a trip to Statesboro, Georgia for the Georgia Southern Fall Shootout Oct. 10-12.
