MACON – The men's and women's tennis teams will both pack up their shows and head to neutral grounds on Sunday when the Bears suit up to take on Army in a doubleheader at Columbus State University's John W. Walden Tennis Center. The women's match will get underway at 10 a.m., with the men set to follow at 2 p.m.
Â
The Mercer women's tennis team (1-6) will look to put the kibosh on a two-match skid when they take to the courts against the Black Knights (10-2) in southwest Georgia. The squads have tangled with one another just one previous time – a 4-1 victory for the Bears last season in West Point, N.Y.
Â
Mercer's men's tennis squad (1-3) split a pair of home matches last weekend, toppling the College of Charleston by a 5-2 count on Friday on the way to tacking up its first win of the campaign, before succumbing to two-time defending Big South champion Gardner-Webb on Sunday. Army (3-3), meanwhile, has split its first six contests of the spring, but are coming off of a 4-1 home win over Marquette on Saturday.
Â
Army took the only official previous matchup with the Bears – a 4-1 victory over the Orange & Black last season in New York. However, MU won five of eight singles matchups, as well as three of four doubles tilts, against the Black Knights earlier this season as part of the Florida Atlantic Hidden Dual Tournament in January.
Â
Freshman Marie Bannmeyer boasts a team-best eight singles victories across the 2024-25 season so far, while senior Emilia Cosatto and junior Marina de Diego Quinones have both tallied a pair of singles victories apiece during the dual meet portion of the campaign. MU's pair of Bannmeyer and graduate transfer Dzhastina Mikhnova have recorded the lone doubles win of the season thus far for the Bears.
Â
Newcomer Hod'Abalo Isak Padio boasts a team-best 12 singles victories on the men's side, while junior Nemanja Stefanovic has tallied 11 singles wins, including two during the spring portion of the 2024-25 campaign. On the doubles courts, Padio and fellow newcomer Amen Prince Gandonou have teamed up for 14 doubles wins, including a pair across the 4-match-old dual schedule.
