
Mercer Falls At Home To Vanderbilt

Abby Morrison earned her 100th career draw control in the loss
MACON, Ga. - Abby Morrison and Sami Lowinger each scored a team high two goals for the Bears, but the Mercer women's lacrosse team fell at home to Vanderbilt, 19-7 Wednesday afternoon from Five Star Stadium.
Mercer led 6-5 late in the second quarter, but Vanderbilt then outscored Mercer, 14-1 the rest of the way to earn the non-conference win.
Vanderbilt outshot Mercer 36-33, including a 27-19 shots on goal advantage. The Commodores were excellent in the draw circle where they had a 17-12 advantage. Turnovers were almost even as Vanderbilt had nine to Mercer's eight.
Abby Morrison led Mercer with four points (2G, 2A) and she also earned her 100th career draw control in the game as well.
Sami Lowinger had two goals and one assist and three different Bears finished with one goal on the afternoon.
Ansley Walters led Mercer with four ground balls and two caused turnovers. Freshman Ayla Galloway earned a career high four draw controls.Â
Three Bears saw time in goal with Kayla Casey getting the start in goal for the Bears. She allowed 10 goals while making six saves for a 37.5 save percentage. Mackenzie Ward played the third quarter and Madison Vane played the fourth quarter for the Bears.
HOW IT HAPPENED
It was a back-and-forth first quarter in which neither team could go on a scoring run. Sofia D'Angelo's first goal as a Bears tied the game at two on an assist from Morrison. Lowinger scored a man-up goal for her first of two goals in the game as Vanderbilt led 4-3 after the first quarter.
Mercer scored three unanswered goals in the middle part of the second quarter to take a 6-5 lead with a little more than four minutes to go in the half. Then, Vanderbilt responded with five consecutive goals all scored in the final three minutes of the half to go up 10-6 at halftime.
The Commodores continued its momentum from the end of the first half into the second half as they outscored Mercer, 5-0 in the third quarter to take control of the game. Vanderbilt scored four more goals in the fourth quarter before Ansley Walters scored in the final minute of the game to make it a 19-7 final from Macon.
