MACON – An early-morning setback to Sun Belt Conference-leading UNC Wilmington was not enough to shake the Mercer beach volleyball team as MU closed out their annual Bears Beach Bash with shutouts of both Jacksonville and Emmanuel on Saturday at Bear Beach.
The Bears (14-6, 1-1 Sun Belt) continued to add to their best start in the 13+-year history of the program, and are now within three wins of matching the school-record win total that the club turned in last season. The Seahawks (12-3, 6-0) have now won nine-straight matches after registering a perfect 6-0 mark on the weekend, including a pair of tight 3-2 affairs against Mercer.
Mercer's No. 4 Pair of Kathryn Corbett and Nicole O'Mara, as well as its No. 5 Pair of Reese Hood and Grace Rathburn, registered perfect 3-0 Saturdays on the sand. Hood/Rathburn accentuated their perfect day with a three-set victory over UNC Wilmington's Tamsie Black and Sophia Puhala. O'Mara/Corbett captured all three of their wins on the day in straight sets.
The Bears are back in action again next weekend, March 28-29, when they head to Foley, Ala., for the Sun Belt Mid-Year Weekend. Mercer is scheduled for league matchups with College of Charleston (5-10, 0-7), Coastal Carolina (8-10, 2-1), Louisiana Monroe (7-9, 0-0) and Georgia State (8-13, 2-0) at the Foley Event Center.
