Mercer Uses Dalley’s Walk-Off Homer To Rattle Georgia State

MACON – Visiting Georgia State rallied for six runs on a trio of hits to take a 2-run lead in the top of the ninth, but Mercer answered with three hits of its own in the bottom of the frame, including a 2-out walk-off homer from Ty Dalley, to stymie the visiting Panthers, 7-6, on Tuesday evening at OrthoGeorgia Park.
Â
Dalley (2-for-5) registered his first multi-homer outing of the season (10th career) to lead the Bears (17-9) who also got multi-hit nights from four other players as well. Ely Brown walked and singled twice on a perfect 2-for-2 hitting line, while Titan Kamaka, Drew Johnson and Zack Thompson all finished with 2-for-4 nights at the plate.
Â
Reliever Collin Ewaldsen (1-2) plugged the dam by working the final two outs in the top of the ninth before eventually picking up his first collegiate victory. Starter Craig Kalkbrenner, as well as successive relief pitchers Lawson Cole and Bryce Hawkins, all turned in multiple innings of scoreless work, but none of them picked up a decision.
Â
Kamaka and Johnson hit successive singles to lead off the evening for Mercer, and Dalley helped the Bears scratch the scoreboard first two batters later when he deposited the first offering from GSU started Jake Hembree into the picnic area in right field. The hosts would eventually add an insurance run in the seventh on Kamaka's 2-out RBI single to the gap in right field.
Â
Despite being held to just three hits through the first eight innings, the Panthers refused to go quietly in the ninth. Kaleb Freeman got the rally started with a leadoff homer, but the visitors used two hits, four walks and a pair of costly errors to score five more times and storm ahead, 6-4.
Thompson hit a 2-strike single to lead off the bottom of the ninth, and Johnson followed with a 1-out single two batters later to set the table for Dalley's dramatics, however.
