FOLEY, Ala. – The Mercer beach volleyball team used a trio of victories to slip past Louisiana Monroe, 3-2, in its Saturday opener, but could not overcome the firepower of 18th-ranked Georgia State en route to succumbing 4-1 to the Panthers in its final matchup of the Sun Belt Mid-Year Weekend at the Foley Events Center.
Mercer's (16-8, 3-3 SBC) early triumph snapped a seven-match skid in the series with the Warhawks (7-12, 1-3 SBC), while also moving the Bears within one victory of matching last year's club for the most wins in the 13+-year history of the program. Georgia State (12-13, 6-0) has captured all 19 matchups in the 12-year-old series with the Orange & Black.
The senior tandem of Nicole O'Mara and Kathryn Corbett was the only ones to escape unscathed on Saturday afternoon. MU's No. 4 Pair turned in a dominant 21-10, 21-10 win over Louisiana Monroe's Kaelyn Huffman and Avery Hunter on Saturday morning, and then came out on the better end of a three-set decision with nationally-ranked Georgia State's Kaylie Drysdale and Ella Mozeleski later Saturday.
Mercer will make a return trip to Jacksonville, Fla., on Saturday and Sunday for the JU Senior Weekend Invite. The Bears are scheduled for a pair of rematches with Eckerd (6-14) at JU's Cooper Beach Volleyball Complex, as well as lone contests with the host Dolphins (6-12) and Webber (7-4).
