MACON – Having already matched the best start in the 13+-year history of its program with a pair of wins on Wednesday, the Mercer beach volleyball team will continue on to its next checkpoint this weekend when it takes part in the Long Beach State-hosted Beach Invitational in Southern California.
The Bears (8-2) will ride a 5-match win streak into Friday's action that will see them face off in a Sun Belt Conference tilt against Southern Miss (4-8) before closing out the day against NCAA Division II powerhouse Vanguard (8-3). Mercer will go head-to-head with a pair of Top 10 teams on Saturday in 8th-ranked Long Beach State (3-3) and 2nd-ranked Loyola Marymount (9-1).
Mercer raked in the program's first two wins against California-based schools on Wednesday with convincing 4-1 triumphs over both Cal State Northridge and Cal State Bakersfield. MU's No. 4 Pair of Kathryn Corbett and Nicole O'Mara put the finishing touches on its ninth-straight win with a 21-17, 21-18 victory against Cal State Bakersfield, while the No. 1 Pair for the Bears – Hollis Engel and Lexi Polychrones – finished off a perfect day on the sand to run its winning skein out to five-straight matches.
The Orange & Black will kick off Friday's action against their SBC foes at Noon ET at the Beach Volleyball Complex. Fans can follow all of the action for free via live statistics links provided by the LBSU athletics department.
