Abby Morrison led Mercer with five goals
TEMPE, Ariz. - Abby Morrison scored a team high five goals, to help lead Mercer to an 18-11 win over UC Davis Friday afternoon in Tempe, Arizona.
After a bit of a slow start and falling behind 1-0, Mercer then began to take control of the game and never looked back. The Bears never trailed again and led by as much as 18-8 before three late goals by the Aggies.
Mercer outshot UC Davis, 35-21, including a 31-15 shots on goal advantage. Draw controls were closed with Mercer winning 16 draws to 15 for UC Davis.
A key factor in the game was turnovers. UC Davis had a season high 26 turnovers to 16 for the Bears. Mercer caused 13 of those 26 turnovers for the Aggies.
Morrison finished the day with five goals and one assist for a career best 6-point outing. She also put in work defensively with one caused turnover and three ground balls.
Caroline Glus had four goals and one assist and Sofia D'Angelo added three goals and one assist to pace the Mercer attack. Defensively, Izzy Parrett and freshman Carley Mullins had great games as they led Mercer with three caused turnovers each.
Kayla Casey earned the win in goal, but was hardly tested, facing just nine shots in the first half and made two saves while allowing just five goals.
HOW IT HAPPENED
UC Davis got the scoring started to take a 1-0 lead. Then, the two teams went back-and-forth with goals the remainder of the first quarter and Mercer led 4-3 after the first 15 minutes.Â
With Mercer leading 5-4 in the second quarter, the Bears would then go on a 4-0 scoring run with four different players accounting for the goals. Maya Maldonado scored the fourth of those goals to give Mercer a 9-4 lead. UC Davis got one back in the final minute before halftime to make it a 9-5 lead for Mercer.
The Bears owned the first 10 minutes of the third quarter, effectively putting the game firmly in their control. Mercer scored the first six goals of the second half to open up a 10-goal lead at 15-5. Morrison, Glus, and D'Angelo each scored two of the six goals in the span to give the Bears a comfortable lead. UC Davis closed the quarter with three straight goals to give them some life with the score 15-8, Mercer heading into the fourth quarter.
The fourth quarter was much of the same of the third quarter - a fast start for Mercer and a strong close to the quarter for UC Davis. Glus, Morrison, and Gabby Brisbin all scored in the first seven minutes of the fourth quarter to essentially put the game away for Mercer with the score 18-8 with under eight minutes to go. The Aggies got three goals back, but in the end it was too little to late as Mercer picked up the non-conference win over the Big 12 member.
NOTABLES
Mercer will travel to play No. 6 Clemson on the road on Tuesday, March 11. First draw is set for 3 p.m. from Clemson, South Carolina.
