MACON – The Mercer men's tennis team will put its seven-match win streak on the line on Saturday morning when the Bears suit up to battle Southern Conference nemesis Samford in an 11 a.m. Senior Day contest at the LeRoy Peddy Tennis Center. Admission is free.
Â
Having already claimed at least a share of its first conference title in the 45-year history of the program with Tuesday's win at Wofford, the Bears (11-6, 6-0 SoCon) can claim the league title outright, as well as the top seed in next week's SoCon Championships in Chattanooga, Tenn., with a win in their home finale on Saturday. Mercer also matched a school record with its seventh-straight win in Tuesday's triumph over the Terriers.
Â
The Bulldogs (15-5, 5-1) are in a similar position heading into Macon this weekend. With a win over Mercer on Saturday, Samford will lay claim to a share of its first SoCon title in program history. Providing it takes care of business at The Citadel, East Tennessee State would also get a piece of the conference crown with a Samford win which would mark the ninth conference regular season championship in the last 10 years for the Bucs.
Â
ETSU snapped Samford's six-match win streak with a 6-1 decision over the Bulldogs on April 4. Mercer toughed out a 4-3 win over ETSU two weeks ago at the LeRoy Peddy Tennis Center.
Â
Samford is 9-6 all-time in the 22-year-old series with the Bears and have won four of the last five matchups with the Orange & Black. The Bulldogs, however, dropped a 5-2 decision to the Bears on their last trip to Macon in 2023 and are 2-4 all-time on the road in the series.
