CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Howell Burns and Esteban Davila Gasser registered a 7-3 tiebreaker victory on Court No. 3 to clinch the key doubles point, and second-seeded Mercer rolled to three-straight wins in singles competition to easy by seventh-seeded Wofford, 4-0, in quarterfinal action at the Southern Conference Championship on Thursday.
Â
It is the eighth win in the last nine outings for Mercer (12-6) who improved to 6-9 all-time at the SoCon Championship, while also picking up its fifth-straight win in the series with the Terriers (6-13). The Bears will now advance to Friday's semifinals at Champions Club in Chattanooga, Tenn., where they will lock horns with third-seeded Samford (17-5) for the second time in six days. Start time for that matchup is scheduled for 10 a.m.
Â
Wofford set the early tone when Robbie Young and Jack Deveney teamed up to register a 6-2 victory in the featured doubles match, but Hod'Abalo Isak Padio and Amen Prince Gandonou evened up doubles play a few minutes later when they finished off an equally-as-dominant 6-2 win on Court No. 2.
Â
Marceau Fouilhoux opened singles competition with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Hugo Rask, and the Bears moved to the cusp of an early finish when Tom Hagelauer turned in a 7-6, 6-4 ouster of Ian Rasheed at No. 4 singles. Howell Burns won the bookends of his matchup with Owen Dooley at No. 6 singles to provide the match-clincher.
