Lowinger and Morrison led Mercer offensively with four goals each
ROCK HILL, S.C. - Sami Lowinger and Abby Morrison scored four goals each and Mercer held on to defeat Winthrop, 15-14 on the road Saturday afternoon from Eagle Field in Rock Hill, South Carolina.
Mercer led 10-5 at halftime, but the Eagles outscored Mercer 9-5 in the second half to cut the deficit to one with under one minute remaining. Winthrop got back in the game by dominating the draw circle, 23-10. It was the second fewest draws for the Bears in a game this season (9 vs Florida).
Mercer outshot Winthrop 35-28, including a 28-22 shots on goal advantage. Mercer did a good job of not turning the ball over as the Bears had a season low five turnovers to 15 for the Eagles.
Caroline Glus was the only other Bear to score more than once in addition to Lowinger and Morrison as Glus had two goals to give her 50 on the season.
Kayla Casey made eight saves in goal for the Bears.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Each team's offense was clicking early with Winthrop leading 3-2 after the first five minutes. Mercer would then score six unanswered goals to take an 8-3 lead less than two minutes into the second quarter. Morrison and Glus accounted for five of the six goals during the scoring run for the Bears.
Two goals from Winthrop cut the deficit to three at 8-5, but Mercer scored the last two goals of the half, including Abby Soltys' first goal of the season and Mercer took a 10-5 lead into halftime.
Goals from Sofia D'Angelo and Abbi Rupnow's first career goal gave Mercer a 12-6 lead, but Winthrop fought back. The Eagles went on a 5-0 scoring run to get within one at 12-11 with 14 minutes to play in the game.
