Mercer led 10-0 at halftime in complete performance
MACON, Ga. - A dominant first half from Mercer saw the Bears lead 10-0 at the break on the way to a dominant 17-4 win over Gardner-Webb, Wednesday evening from Boiling Springs, North Carolina.Â
Gabby Brisbin and Caroline Glus led the Mercer attack with four goals each and the Mercer defense held Gardner-Webb to just nine shots total as the Bears improved to 2-0 in conference play.
The first half shutout of the Runnin' Bulldogs was the first time the Bears shutout an opponent in a half this season. Mercer caused 11 turnovers as Gardner-Webb committed 21 turnovers to just 10 for the Bears. Shots were 34-9, Mercer and the Bears also won the draw control battle, 14-9.
Eight different Mercer players scored with Brisbin and Glus accounting for nearly half of the team's goals. Abby Morrison had a hat trick and Krissy Rael had a season high three points (2G, 1A).
Abby Soltys led Mercer defensively with a great game as she had three caused turnovers and one ground ball. In the draw circle, nine different Bears combined to win 14 draws, led by Ansley Walters and Ayla Galloway who won three each.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Mercer outscored Gardner-Webb, 4-0 in the first quarter with four different players accounting for each goal. Goals from Brisbin and Morrison in the first three minutes of the second quarter gave the Bears a 6-0 lead.
Sofia D'Angelo and Glus each scored back-to-back goals to cap a resounding first half for Mercer who led 10-0 at the half.
The Bears kept the momentum going in the third quarter by scoring the first four goals of the third quarter, including two from Brisbin to all but put the game away with a 14-0 lead with a few minutes left in the third quarter.
Three straight goals from the Runnin' Bulldogs made it a 14-3 game, but Mercer responded with a 3-0 run themselves to ease to a 17-4 conference win on the road.

Mercer returns home to welcome Radford for Senior Day on Saturday, April 5. First draw is set for noon from Five Star Stadium.
