JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Mercer combined for a septet of straight-sets victories in posting a 4-1 win over Eckerd, as well as a 5-0 blanking of Webber, to close out its stay at the Jacksonville-hosted JU Senior Weekend on Sunday afternoon at Dolphin Beach.
The decisions marked the 18th and 19th victories of the campaign for the Bears (19-9) who not only established a new program superlative for single-season wins, but also used the triumphs to clinch a winning season for just the second time in the 14-year existence of the program (first since 2017).
Mercer improved to 7-0 all-time in its 7-year-old series with Eckerd (6-17) by registering its second win in just more than 24 hours (third of season) over the Tritons. The afternoon matchup marked the first meeting between MU and Webber who is ranked No. 8 in the latest NAIA Coaches Top 10 poll.
Three different pairs registered a pair of victories on the day for the Bears, including Liv Diaz and Jordan Paddock who took care of both matchups on Court No. 1. Benson became the latest addition to the program's 50-Win Club by teaming up with Kate Hardie for a pair of straight-sets wins on Court No. 3, while Nicole O'Mara and Kathryn Corbett tallied their 11th and 12th victories in their last 14 outings with two straight-sets triumphs as well.
The Bears will be back in action again next weekend, April 11-12, when they make a return trip to Jacksonville for the North Florida Invite. MU is scheduled for a pair of matchups against both Jacksonville (11-13) and the 16th-ranked Ospreys (17-5) at the two-day event.
