GILBERT, Ariz. – A banner season on the courts was complemented with a testament to the Mercer's men's tennis team's work ethic in the classroom on Wednesday when the Bears were crowned as an all-academic team by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA).
Â
The Orange & Black was one of 159 NCAA Division I men's tennis programs recognized by the association in their midweek announcement. To be named an ITA All-Academic Team, programs must have a team grade point average of 3.2 or above (on a 4.00 scale).Â
Â
Seven student-athletes – Amen Prince Gandonou, Marceau Fouilhoux, Howell Burns, Hod'Abalo Isak Padio, Nemanja Stefanovic, Cameron Douthit and Shingo Masuda – were also recognized as ITA Scholar-Athletes which recognizes individuals that posted a grade point average of at least 3.5 (on a 4.00 scale) for the 2024-25 academic year.
Â
Wednesday's academic laurel put a scholarly punctuation mark on an historic 2025 campaign for the Bears. MU won eight of its last 10 matches on the way to capturing a share of its first conference title in program history. It was also the first time since 2017-18 that the Orange & Black (12-8) has finished with a winning record.
Â
The ITA is the governing body of college tennis, overseeing men's and women's varsity tennis at all levels – NCAA Divisions I, II and III, NAIA and Junior/Community College.
