HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Mercer volleyball team was unable to top the Golden Eagles on day one of the Southern Miss Invitational in Hattiesburg, Miss. on Friday night, defeating the Bears 0-3.

Freshman outside hitter Charlotte Thompson led the offensive effort for Mercer with nine kills on the night. Sophia Henry was not far behind, registering eight kills and seven assists against the Golden Eagles. Jessica Dunn and Sammi Bergjans each posted 10 assists and sophomore libero Aubri Martin continues to have a stellar start to her sophomore campaign with 16 digs.

Mercer will return to the Southern Miss Wellness Center on Saturday, Sept. 13, where they will take on Mississippi State in day two of the Southern Miss Invitational. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m. (ET) and will have live stats available to follow along with.

MATCH REPLAY
SET 1 I 21-25	Both squads started off the match fairly even, exchanging leads throughout the first 18 total points of the match. Southern Miss took a 15-12 lead but the Bears responded to take the lead at the 16-15 mark with a kill from Sophia Henry. The Golden Eagles took a 21-19 lead and were able to hold it the remainder of the set.
SET 2 I 21-25	Mercer recorded the first two points of set two off of a kill from Charlotte Thompson and an ace from Sammi Bergjans. Both teams exchanged leads again throughout the remainder of the set until Southern Miss was able to string together a few kills forcing a must-win set three for Mercer.
SET 3 I 17-25	The Golden Eagles used the momentum they gained in set two and took it into set three gaining an early 9-5 lead over Mercer. A kill from Thompson put the Bears back within one but Southern Miss used a four-point service run to extend their lead 14-9. The Golden Eagles' front line came to life to shut the door on the Bears, picking up their fifth win of the season.
