Farr and Nutzman scored two minutes apart
GREENVILLE, S.C. – Sydney Farr and Payton Nutzman scored two minutes apart in the first half as Mercer came back from an early 2-0 deficit to earn a 2-2 draw at Furman Thursday night from Stone Stadium in Greenville, South Carolina.
Furman scored twice in the first 16 minutes of the game, however Mercer responded with goals from Farr and Nutzman in the 32nd and 34th minutes of the game to even the score.
Furman outshot Mercer 12-8, including a 6-4 shots on goal advantage. Corners in the game were 6-4, Furman. Â
The Paladins struck first in the seventh minute after a misplay in the back by the Bears to take a 1-0 lead. Furman added a second off a corner kick in the 16th minute to take a 2-0 lead.
In the 32nd minute Farr received a pass in the box and was tripped. She stepped up to the penalty spot and buried her shot to the top right of the goal to cut Mercer's deficit in half.
Less than two minutes later, Maria Karipidis sent a cross into the 6-yard box that was punched out by the Furman goalkeeper. Nutzman beat everyone to the loose ball and hit a first-time shot from the top of the box that went into the top left corner to tie the game at two.
Both teams had a few scoring chances in the second half, but both defenses were well organized and kept out any quality scoring chances for the opposing offensive attacks.
