Mercer scored all three goals within the first 11 minutes of the game

GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Mercer women's soccer team used a fast start, scoring three goals in the first 11 minutes of the game, to defeat Wofford 3-2 in the SoCon Tournament First Round Friday night from Stone Stadium in Greenville, South Carolina.

The No. 7 seed Bears controlled the game for much of the 90 minutes, outshooting the No. 10 seed Terriers, 19-7, including a 9-4 edge in shots on goal. Mercer also had nine corners to just two for the Terriers. However, Wofford fought back and scored two goals, one in each half, but Mercer was able to protect a one-goal lead for the final 30 minutes to advance to the SoCon Tournament Quarterfinals.

Mercer scored the opening goal just 1:41 into the game. Anna Bachman sent a corner kick to the near post where Maggie Rollins headed the ball to the far post and in for an early 1-0 lead. Then, in the seventh minute, Olivia Bori was pulled down in the box giving the Bears a penalty kick. Bori stepped up and placed her shot perfectly in the bottom right corner to give the Bears a 2-0 lead.

In the 11th minute, once again, the Bears put pressure on the Wofford defense and Bori got to a loose ball at the 6-yard box and played it out near the top right of the 18-yard box to Anna Bachman who took a shot on her first touch that found the top right corner for the Bears' third goal in the first 11 minutes of the game.

Wofford was able to get a goal just before halftime in the 44th minute, to make it 3-1 Bears at the break. In the 59th minute, Wofford scored a second on a cross into the box, putting pressure on Mercer to protect a one-goal lead for over 30 minutes.

Mercer was able to still create chances offensively, looking to add a fourth goal and give itself more breathing room down the closing stretch of the game. Ariel Bolton had one of those quality scoring opportunities on a long pass behind the Terrier defense, and with the goalie out, Bolton just pulled her shot wide left of the goal. Mercer did a good job defensively to prevent the Terriers from any good looks in the final few minutes and the Bears held on for the 3-2 win.
