
Bears Earn Strong 7-0 Win At Western Carolina

MACON, Ga. – The Mercer women's tennis team picked up its first SoCon win in dominant fashion, winning 7-0 over Western Carolina Thursday afternoon from the Catamount Athletic Complex.
Western Carolina only fielded two doubles teams, so Mercer's Marie Bannmeyer and Antonia Schweigel won by walkover on court three. Marina de Diego Quinones and Ines Hömberg defeated Western Carolina's Mariya Dobreba and Mia Miranda, 6-2 to clinch the doubles point for the Bears. The match on court two was also won by the Bears. Sofiya Tsitavets and Tea Zivic won 6-3 over Western Carolina's Axelle Van Beurden and Jenelle Roberts.
In singles action, Jelena Gojkovic won by walkover on court six. On court three, Sofiya Tsitavets won after Western Carolina's Mia Miranda retired in the second set after Tsitavets won the first set 6-0.
With Mercer leading 3-0, Marie Bannmeyer clinched the match for Mercer with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Western Carolina's Axelle Van Beurden. On court one, after grinding out a first set tiebreaker, Marina de Diego Quinones put together a great second set to win 7-6(8), 6-1 over Western Carolina's Mariya Dobreva.
The match on court two went three sets where ultimately Tea Zivic came back after dropping the first set to win, 4-6, 6-4, 7-6(3) over Western Carolina's Janelle Roberts to end the match with the Bears on top, 7-0.
Mercer will return next Wednesday, April 8 to to take on Chattanooga from Chattanooga, Tennessee. The match is scheduled to start at 2 p.m.
