
Mercer Defeats Longwood To Win Outright Big South Regular Season Title

Bears win fifth consecutive Big South regular season title
MACON, Ga. – The Mercer women's lacrosse team celebrated senior day in style with an 18-8 win over Longwood Saturday afternoon from Five Star Stadium, to cap off an undefeated Big South record and win the outright Big South regular season title.

It is the fifth straight season in which the Bears have won at least a share of the Big South regular season title. Mercer will now host the Big South Tournament in Macon next weekend.

Mercer had the better of play for most of the day as shots were 44-15. The Bears were once again excellent on the draw control as Mercer won 22-of-28 draws behind Ayla Galloway's program tying 19 draw controls.

Senior attacker Caroline Glus led Mercer offensively with four goals, two assists, three caused turnovers and four ground balls. She was one of three Mercer players with hat tricks as Sofia D'Angelo and Josie Parrett each had three goals on the afternoon.
Defensively, outside of Glus' three caused turnovers, Abby Vane had two caused turnovers and seven other players had one caused turnover. Senior Madison Vane got the start in goal and made two saves.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Both teams traded goals throughout the first half as the score was tied 3-3 after the first quarter. Glus, Maya Maldonado and Abbi Rupnow were the goal scorers in the first quarter for the Bears.
Mercer took advantage of two Longwood yellow cards to start the fourth quarter and scored four consecutive woman-up goals to take a 7-3 lead. Glus scored two of those goals for the Bears to complete her first half hat trick.
D'Angelo then scored her first goal of the game, before the Lancers got one back to make it 8-4, Mercer. Shortly later, D'Angelo scored her second and third goals of the game and Ansley Walters and Gabby Brisbin each scored in the final two minutes of the half as Mercer led 13-4 at halftime.
Glus and Abby Vane each scored within the first three minutes of the third quarter to give Mercer a 15-4 lead. Parrett scored her hat trick with just over one minute to play in the third quarter as Mercer led 17-5 after three quarters of action.
Redshirt freshman Casey Gilbert scored her second career goal off an assist from Ellie Foresman for Mercer's lone goal of the fourth quarter as the Bears wrapped up an 18-8 win over Longwood.
NOTABLES
Mercer will wait to see who will be its semifinal opponent in the Big South Tournament. Mercer will play the winner of the No. 4/5 game on Friday, May 1 which will be determined following the conclusion of all regular season games on Saturday.
