
Mercer Picks Up A 13-6 Win At Furman

Mercer improves to 3-0 in Big South play
GREENVILLE, S.C. - Sofia D'Angelo had a game high five points to help lead the Mercer women's lacrosse team to a 13-6 win over Furman Wednesday night from Paladin Stadium in Greenville, South Carolina.
Mercer took a season high 53 shots in the game with 26 of them on goal. Furman had just 19 shots with 11 on goal. Mercer gave up the first two goals of the game, but responded by scoring the next seven goals in the first half to take a 7-2 lead into halftime in which the Bears would never relinquish.
Mercer won 12 draw controls to nine for Furman. The Paladins had twice as many turnovers as the Bears with 16, to Mercer's eight.
Sofia D'Angelo led all players with five points (4G, 1A). Caroline Glus had another hat trick to go with one assist for a 4-point night. Ansley Walters scored her second hat trick of the season and Maya Maldonado added to her team leading assist mark with three more helpers in the game.
Defensively, Fiona Tanis led Mercer with three caused turnovers and two ground balls. As a team Mercer had 10 caused turnovers in the game. Mackenzie Ward made five saves and allowed just six goals. Ayla Galloway had a game high eight draw controls.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Mercer got off to a slow start, falling behind 2-0 midway through the first quarter. Josie Parret got the Bears on the board with a great shot from the right side of the field to make it 2-1. Ansley Walters scored her first of three goals a few minutes later and the score was tied, 2-2 after the first period.
Maldonado set up goals from D'Angelo and Glus as the Bears took a 4-2 lead with more than eight minutes to go in the second quarter. Reaghan Lomascola scored off an assist from D'Angelo and Glus and Walters followed by each scoring their second goals of the game as Mercer took a 7-2 lead into halftime.
After Furman scored the first goal of the second half less than two minutes into the third quarter, Walters scored her hat trick and Josie Parrett scored her second goal of the game to give the Bears a 9-3 lead.Â
D'Angelo would score her second and third goals of the game four minutes apart in the third quarter to give Mercer an 11-3 lead. Furman went on a 3-0 run over the final few minutes of the third quarter and into the first three minutes of fourth quarter. The Paladins' run made it a 11-6 lead for Mercer. Glus and D'Angelo scored the final two goals of the game as Mercer ended on top, 13-6.
NOTABLES
Mercer returns home to host Winthrop on Saturday, April 11. The game is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start inside Five Star Stadium.
