Mercer improves to 4-0 in Big South play
MACON, Ga. - Sofia D'Angelo finished with a career high seven points and Ayla Galloway won a program record 17 draw controls to help the Mercer women's lacrosse team win in dominant fashion over Winthrop, 19-3, Saturday afternoon from Five Star Stadium.
Mercer took a season high 59 shots in the game with 34 of them on goal. Mercer's defense was smothering all game, holding Winthrop to a season low nine shots shots throughout the game. Winthrop had 23 turnovers with the Bears causing a season high 17 turnovers for the Eagles.
Galloway won a career high 17 draw controls in a game in which draw controls were 20-4, Mercer. Her 17 draw controls broke the single-game program record, previously shared by Galloway and Erin Degnan who each previously won 16 draw controls.
Sofia D'Angelo had another stellar game for the Bears' attack. D'Angelo finished with a career high seven points (4G, 3A). Her three assists were a season high. Caroline Glus finished with five goals and two ground balls.
Defensively, freshman Sophie Andrychowski led Mercer with three caused turnovers and two ground balls. Mackenzie Ward made five saves and allowed just two goals for a 71.4 percent save percentage.
HOW IT HAPPENED
D'Angelo opened the scoring less than one minute into the game. After a brief period where both teams stood tall defensively and no goals were scored for more than six minutes, Glus put the Bears in front by two with her first goal of the game.
Reaghan Lomascola would score less than one minute later and Glus would then score her second of the quarter as Mercer led 4-0 after the first quarter.
The second quarter was perhaps Mercer's best. The Bears went on a 4-0 run to start the quarter with four different players accounting for each goal. Winthrop stopped the Bears' run with their first goal of the game with just under five minutes remaining in the second quarter.
Mercer would not let up, and extended its cushion before halftime with four more goals in the final five minutes of the half. Glus scored two of the goals for her first half hat trick and Mercer took a 12-1 lead into halftime.
Mercer kept it rolling on both offense in defense throughout the third quarter. D'Angelo scored her third and fourth goals of the game as Mercer outscored the Eagles, 5-0 in the quarter and led 17-1 after three quarters.
In the fourth quarter, Brooke Jones scored her second goal of the season and Keira Wallace scored her first career goal as Mercer finished off a strong win at home.
