
Mercer Rolls To 17-4 Win Over Gardner-Webb

Mercer improves to 5-0 in Big South play
BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - Caroline Glus scored four goals to lead Mercer's attack in another dominant showing as the Mercer women's lacrosse team won 17-4 over Gardner-Webb Wednesday evening from Spangler Stadium in Boiling Springs, North Carolina.
With the win, the Bears improve to 5-0 in Big South play. Mercer has held all five conference opponents to six goals or less.
The Bears' defense shutout Gardner-Webb in the second half. Mercer outshot Gardner-Webb, 42-12, including a 31-8 edge in shots on goal. Gardner-Webb had trouble all game protecting the ball as the Runnin' Bulldogs had 29 turnovers with Mercer causing 13 of them. Mercer won 14 draw controls to 10 for Gardner-Webb.
Caroline Glus led all players with four goals and one assist. She registered her 200th career point in the game as well. Sofia D'Angelo and Gabby Brisbin each scored a hat trick.Â
Defensively, freshman Josie Parret led Mercer with three caused turnovers and one ground ball. Mackenzie Ward made three saves and allowed just four goals for a 42.9 percent save percentage.
HOW IT HAPPENED
D'Angelo and Glus each scored within the first three minutes of the game to give the Bears an early 2-0 lead. Glus scored her second and third goals of the game later in the quarter, but Gardner-Webb scored twice as well as Mercer led 4-2 after the first quarter.
Reaghan Lomascola would score less than one minute later and Glus would then score her second of the quarter as Mercer led 4-0 after the first quarter.
Mercer scored the first four goals of the second quarter to open up an 8-2 lead. Four different Mercer players accounted for all four of the goals. that were scored in the first six minutes of the second quarter.
After Gardner-Webb got two goals back to make it 8-4, Glus and Brisbin each scored in the final three minutes of the half to give the Bears a 10-4 lead going into halftime.
The second half was all Mercer as the Bears outscored the Runnin' Bulldogs, 7-0 in the final 30 minutes. Brisbin scored her second goal of the game, and Abby Vane scored twice as well to give Mercer a 14-4 lead. Josie Parret scored her second goal of the game with just over three minutes to go in the third quarter as Mercer took a 15-4 lead into the fourth quarter.
In the fourth quarter, Brisbin finished off her hat trick and Gracie Ochoa scored her third goal of the season as Mercer put the finishing touches on a dominant, 17-4 win.

Mercer heads back on the road to take on Radford on Saturday, April 18. First draw from Radford, Virginia is set for 11 a.m.
