Fernando Arteaga joined the Mercer men’s soccer coaching staff as an assistant coach in the summer of 2026. Arteaga played four seasons with the Bears and helped Mercer win the Southern Conference championship in 2023.
The former attacking midfielder made 59 appearances (22 starts) and logged 3,020 minutes for the orange and black. Arteaga found the back of the net seven times and assisted six goals throughout his career in Macon.
A native of Jonesboro, Georgia, Arteaga joined the program in 2022 and made an immediate impact on the pitch. Arteaga scored a brace in his collegiate debut against Winthrop. Three matches later, Arteaga assisted two goals in the second half to give the Bears a 3-2 comeback win at Virginia Tech. The SoCon awarded the youngster with All-Freshman Team honors for his terrific first year.
In 2023, Arteaga made a career-best 19 appearances and made seven starts in the Bears’ championship-winning season. Arteaga helped Mercer keep seven clean sheets, scored his third collegiate goal and logged 783 minutes, including 64 in a 2-0 win over Furman in the SoCon championship match.
Although he missed the first half of his senior season, Arteaga had one of the best offensive seasons of his career and earned All-SoCon Second Team honors. Arteaga scored three goals and assisted three more in just ten matches (nine starts). Arteaga recorded the second brace of his career in Mercer’s 5-4 win over Wofford. Arteaga’s 13th-minute Olimpico was tabbed the game-winning goal in the Bears’ 2-0 win over VMI.
