Kim Lewis will begin his fifth season as an assistant coach at Mercer for the 2023-24 season, which will be his 23rd at the NCAA Division I level. He was hired on April 17, 2019.
In 2022-23, the Bears logged 14 wins, including season sweeps of ETSU, The Citadel, and VMI. The Bears added another win against The Citadel in the first round of the Southern Conference Championships to advance to face Furman in the Quarterfinals. Lewis was instrumental in the development of guard Jah Quinones and helped him earn All-Freshman Team honors. Quinones played in all but one game during the season, starting eight contests. He scored in double figures seven times, and he posted seven games leading the team in rebounds, 10 games with the team-lead in steals, and six games leading the team in assists. The 2022-23 squad etched its name in program history, draining the most field goals in a single game against Milligan with 46. The 851 field goals made in the season entered at 10th in the record book. The Bears started the season with incredible assist numbers, breaking the single game assist record against Milligan with 31 and tying it less than a month later against Middle Georgia State. 118 points scored against Milligan set a new program record, previously unbroken since 2014.
During the 2021-22 season, Lewis helped Mercer to a quarterfinal appearance at the Southern Conference Championships in a 16-win season under Gary. The Bears posted a five-game winning streak early in non-conference play and recorded a three-game win streak once league play began. Working with the guards, Lewis helped Jordan Jones earn a spot on the All-Freshman Team. Jones started 10 games in 21 appearances, shooting 43.1% from the field, 40% from distance, and 66.7% from the free throw line. The 2,325 points scored during the season landed ninth in Mercer's record book for single season scoring total. The 2021-22 squad also set a new Mercer program record with a 77% free throw percentage. Jalen Johnson led this charge, shooting 89.5% from the charity stripe which ranks third in Mercer history. More history was cemented as the Bears made a program-high 17 three-pointers against VMI. Johnson made eight of these, adding to his season total of 76 which placed him eighth in the records for most triples made in a season. The 268 made by the team ranks fourth in program history.
Lewis helped the Bears go 18-11 overall in his second season under Gary and advance to the SoCon championship game for the first time since the University joined the league in 2014-15. The Bears began the season with a bang, starting 6-0, which included an 83-73 win at Georgia Tech, for their best start since 1966-67. Lewis worked primarily with the guards and played a vital role in the development of redshirt sophomore guard Neftali Alvarez. In his first season with the Orange & Black, Alvarez led the team with 13.3 points and 4.2 assists per game. He dished out 113 assists, the second-highest total in the Southern Conference, which placed him 69th nationally. As a team, the Bears led the conference and were 11th among all NCAA Division I schools with 479 total helpers. Under Lewis’ guidance, Ross Cummings reached 1,000 career points and 200 made three-pointers, reaching both milestones in a December game against Wofford on national TV. Cummings ended his career with 246 three-pointers, second only to Langston Hall’s 257, and 1,244 points, which placed him 16th all-time. Cummings and Alvarez both earned All-SoCon honors at the end of the regular season. At the end of the conference tournament, two of Lewis’ mentees – Alvarez and Leon Ayers III – were named to the All-SoCon Tournament team.
Lewis played a pivotal role in Mercer’s 17 wins in 2019-20, including six consecutive from January 15 – February 1, 2020, which helped Mercer earn National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Division I Team of the Week honors on February 4. The Bears won 11 Southern Conference contests and locked up the No. 4 seed for the league tournament before bowing out in the quarterfinals. Three players – Djordje Dimitrijevic, Ethan Stair and Kamar Robertson – earned All-SoCon honors. Dimitrijevic was also honored by the NABC as a Second Team All-District XXI selection and a College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Second Team Academic All-American.
Prior to Mercer, Lewis served on Richmond’s staff from 2011-19 with the last seven being as an assistant coach. The Spiders won 19-plus games in four different seasons during Lewis’ tenure, including 22 in 2016-17 when they made a run to the NIT semifinals.

He also coached at Xavier University of Louisiana, McNeese State and Northeastern. He began his career at Tulane as a volunteer assistant coach for the 1996-97 season.
