
Volleyball Nipped by North Florida, 3-1

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Mercer had three players reach double-figure kill totals in a 3-1 (17-25, 25-18, 25-23, 25-23) loss to North Florida Saturday afternoon at UNF Arena.
Mercer dropped its second-straight match and fell to 5-13 (0-4 A-Sun) while North Florida moved to 8-9 (2-2 A-Sun).
Junior Jennifer Katona collected a team-high 13 kills while seniors Anna Coursey and Amiee Frutchey each contributed 10 kills.
Katona's 13 kills came with just three errors on 25 swings as the Santa Monica, Calif. native finished with a team-high .400 hitting percentage. Katona has now had 10 or more kills in six times this season.
Coursey's 10 kill performance came with only two errors and marked her fourth double-figure kill effort of the season. The Savannah, Ga. native also booked three total blocks, two digs and an assist on Saturday.
Frutchey pounded out her 10 kills on 30 swings and also tallied eight digs in the loss.
Junior Madeline Dolny had her second-straight double-double with a team-high 23 assists and 11 digs. Dolny has a team-leading four double-double efforts in 2011.
Mercer jumped all over UNF in the early going, racing out to an 11-4 lead in the opening set before cruising to a 25-17 victory. Mercer racked up a red-hot .375 hitting percentage in the first frame and limited the hosts to a .081 attacking efficiency.
Katona sparked Mercer's early success, knocking down five kills on seven swings in the first set.
UNF retaliated with a .387 hitting percentage in the second set to even the match at 1-1.
In the third set, Mercer battled back from a 19-11 deficit, eventually tying the score at 23 apiece. UNF gained set-point following a Mercer attacking error and closed the frame on a kill by Carolyn Jenkins.
The fourth set was the most competitive, featuring seven tie scores and two lead changes. The teams played even through the first 22 points, but UNF took a 12-11 lead and held that advantage the remainder of the contest.
UNF placed four players in double-figure kill totals, led by junior Paige Pridgeon's 20 kill effort. Pridegon was also credited with 14 digs and was one of three UNF players to notch double-doubles in the match.
Mercer returns to action hosting Florida Gulf Coast on October 7. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
