
Florida Gulf Coast Tops Volleyball in Five Sets

MACON, Ga. – Madeline Dolny and Amiee Frutchey both had double-double efforts as Mercer fell to Florida Gulf Coast 3-2 (25-19, 20-25, 25-21, 16-25, 15-12) in Friday night's Atlantic Sun volleyball match at the University Center.
The Eagles remained unbeaten in A-Sun play, improving their record to 9-7 (4-0 A-Sun) while Mercer fell to 5-14 (0-5 A-Sun).
"On paper victory could have fallen our way," Mercer head coach Noelle Rooke said. "We put up great numbers and did great things as a team. All we are going to do is keep plugging away because there are at lot of conference matches left."
Dolny dished out 49 assists and added 12 digs while Frutchey piled up a team-high 17 kills and had 13 digs. Dolny now has three-straight matches with 20 or more assists and Frutchey has three-straight matches with double-digit kills.
Dolny's 49 assists was the most for a Mercer player since Kelly Jansen collected 67 in a five set match at USC Upstate on November 2, 2007.
All told, the match featured 18 tie scores and six lead changes.
Mercer held advantages in sideout percentage (60%-59%) and blocks (11-9), while FGCU had more kills (59-58), assists (57-55) and digs (69-68).
Junior Jennifer Katona knocked down 13 kills in the loss while senior Anna Coursey added 10 kills of her own. Katona and Coursey also finish the match with just four errors apiece.
Five Mercer players booked double-digit digs, led by senior Charlotte Harris' team-high 15. Junior Jamie Duffy and sophomore Emily Rochefort each had 11 digs on Friday.
After splitting the first two sets, Mercer and FGCU battled to an even 12-12 score in the fifth set. Ultimately, the Eagles were able to score three consecutive points to close out the match.
Mercer had four players finish with hitting percentage of .250 or better.
Mercer returns to action hosting Stetson on Saturday at 3 p.m.
