"The wind actually let up this morning and we just didn't take advantage of it," Mercer head coach Andrew Tredway said. "We got off to a rough start and just never recovered."
Mercer trails 10th place Loyola Marymount by a single stroke with 18 holes to play.
"We are definitely a better team than that," Tredway said. "Our guys know that and we expect to play better tomorrow."
The 6,798-yard venue, located on Oregon's Pacific Coast, presented an unfamiliar challenge for Mercer's competitors.
DeMoss was one of just five players in the 90-golfer field to break 70 in either round on Friday. Following his stellar round one performance, the Duluth, Ga. product needed 80 strokes his second round of competition and is part of a six-way tie for 31st place individually.

Junior Josh Cone fired an even-par 72 in the first round before adding 10 strokes to that total in his second 18 holes. Cone's day-one total of 154 gives him sole possession of 54th place overall.
Sophomore John Gregory Joseph turned in scores of 77 and 80 and is tied for 66th place while freshman Hans Reimers took 164 swings (79-85) on Friday and is tied for 84th place overall.
