BRASELTON, Ga. – Freshman Hans Reimers fired Mercer's low round on the opening day of the Atlantic Sun Men's Golf Championship and the Bears finished day one tied for eighth place. Reimers' one-under 70 helped Mercer to a day one score of 294 (+10).
Kennesaw State leads the event with a score of 280 while USC Upstate, North Florida and Campbell are locked in a tie for second place (285). Mercer's team total of 294 equaled the effort of Stetson and has the Bears four strokes ahead of Jacksonville and Lipscomb.
"One or two guys stuck to the game plan, but we need five," Mercer head coach Andrew Tredway said.
Reimers collected three birdies and two bogeys en route to Mercer's only sub-par round of the day. Reimers' Monday effort gave him a tie for eighth place on the player leaderboard.
After using 38 (+2) strokes on the front nine, junior Josh Cone battled back and posted a 34 (-1) on the back nine to finish one over par. Cone's 72 slotted the Thomasville, Ga. native in a tie for 15th place overall.
Sophomores Matt Kocolowski and Thomas Holmes each needed 76 strokes to complete 18 holes on Monday and are in an eight-way tie for 39th individually.
Freshman Mookie DeMoss signed for an 81 and is in 54th place overall.
"Unfortunately, we went out there and tried to play perfect golf and it caught us starting on [the fifth hole]," Tredway said. "We have to learn to play ugly and just give ourselves a chance to score. We can talk about it all we want but they need to go execute it. We can definitely play better, but the guys just need to commit to that game plan."
Round two of the three round event begins Tuesday at 8 a.m. DeMoss is scheduled to go off first for Mercer at 9:30 a.m.
"This wasn't at all the way we envisioned starting, but this is where we are at now and we just need to go put it together tomorrow," Tredway said. "We have been in worse jams this year after one round so we know we can dig it out from here against quality teams."
