BRASELTON, Ga. – The Mercer men's golf team completed Tuesday's second round of the Atlantic Sun Championship with a score of 289. Mercer's day two total was five strokes better than its score in the first round and leaves the team in eighth place.
Kennesaw State leads the 11-team field with a two round total of 563. North Florida and Campbell are tied for second place and trail Kennesaw State by just five strokes. Mercer's 36-hole score of 583 is one shot better than Jacksonville and just four strokes off the pace of USC Upstate and East Tennessee State.
Mercer got unlucky on Tuesday when sophomore Thomas Holmes came down with illness and was forced to withdraw. Holmes' exit meant the Bears would have to count all four of their participants' scores.
"Obviously playing with only four players is tough and I think the guys did a good job of dealing with that this morning," Mercer head coach Andrew Tredway said. "Thomas is a tough competitor and I'm really proud that he gave it a go this morning despite feeling bad."
Mercer freshman Hans Reimers carded the team's low round for the second straight day, this time posting an even-par 71. Reimers is tied for eighth place with a two day total of 141.
Junior Josh Cone booked 15 pars on Tuesday en route to a 3-over 74. Entering Wednesday's final round, Cone is tied for 23rd place individually.
Matt Kocolowski and Mookie DeMoss each shot 1-over 72's in Tuesday's action. Kocolowski's 72 combines with his day one 76 to place the sophomore tied for 36th place.
DeMoss' 72 was a nine stroke improvement on his Monday total and slots the freshman 49th overall.
"We hit it pretty well today, but just couldn't make any putts," Tredway said. "This course is frustrating in that it doesn't really reward good strategists or ball strikers, it's just about making putts."
The third and final day of the A-Sun Championship is scheduled for an 8 a.m. start on Wednesday. DeMoss sports Mercer's earliest tee time with a 9:30 a.m. departure.
"We need to go out tomorrow with the same mindset and hopefully start making a few more birdies and move up the leaderboard."
