MACON, Ga. – Mercer baseball junior third baseman Jacob Tanis was taken by the Oakland Athletics in the 13th round of the 2011 MLB First-Year Player Draft on Tuesday afternoon.
Tanis was the first Atlantic Sun Conference player selected in this year's draft and the 406th overall pick.
“What a great honor it is for Jacob to get drafted and by a quality organization like the Oakland Athletics,” head coach Craig Gibson said. “I think it speaks volumes for both Jacob and our program that he was the first Atlantic Sun Conference player taken in the draft and we wish him the best of luck whichever way he decides to go in the near future.”
This is now the second time Tanis has been taken in the First-Year Player Draft after being selected in the 26th round (800th pick) by the Colorado Rockies in 2010.
The Peachtree City, Ga. native just completed a spectacular junior campaign for the Bears during which he was named an A-Sun All-Conference first team selection for the second-straight season. Tanis finished the season leading the conference with 75 RBI while ranking among the A-Sun Top-10 in home runs (T-2nd – 15), total bases (4th – 145), runs scored (6th – 61), slugging percentage (7th - .612), hits (T-8th – 83) and on-base percentage (10th - .446).
Rounds 21-30 still have to be decided tonight and rounds 31-50 begin tomorrow at 12 noon. Several Mercer players are considered draft prospects so stay tuned to www.mercerbears.com over the next two days for up to date 2011 MLB Draft coverage.
