Mercer plays College of Charleston to 0-0 Draw

MACON, Ga. – The Mercer men's soccer team earned a solid result after going on the road and playing to a 0-0 draw against College of Charleston on Saturday evening at Patriots Point Athletic Complex.
College of Charleston was ranked 44th in the 2011 TopDrawerSoccer.com Men's Soccer Preseason Rankings and returned six starters from its 2010 NCAA Tournament team.
The Bears absolutely dominated the first half of play, racking up six corner kicks and out-shooting the Cougars 4-1. However, the score remained knotted up at 0-0 going into intermission.
The Orange and Black's best scoring chance of the half came in the 35th minute when sophomore Ryan King collected a pass from freshman Carl-Oscar Andersson in the box, but his shot on goal was saved by CofC goalkeeper Kees Heemskerk.
The second half started with much more action from both sides and another scoring chance for the Bears. Junior Joey Heavner got behind the Cougars back line in the 54th minute, but right as he collected the ball and fired a shot, Heemskerk came way off his line to block the attempt.
CofC had a great chance of its own in the 60th minute when junior Ralphie Lundy fired a hard high shot that freshman goalkeeper Greg Ranjitsingh leaped in the air and tipped over the bar to keep the score 0-0.
That is the way the game ended up, as both teams failed to put the ball in the back of the net, yielding a 0-0 result at the end of regulation time.
Ranjitsingh played all 90 minutes in net for the Bears and recorded six saves to preserve the shutout.
Mercer hits the road to open its 2011 regular season on August 27, when it travels to Asheville to take on UNC-Asheville. Game time is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Greenwood Soccer Field
