MACON, Ga. – An undermanned Mercer men's soccer team eventually fell to No. 12 UCF 5-2 on Sunday afternoon at Bear Field.
Mercer (1-3-1) was missing two starters in Sunday's contest due to an injury and a red card in the previous match. Head coach Brad Ruzzo had a short bench to work with and in the end UCF (5-0-0) had too much firepower for the Bears to overcome.
The Knights received two first half tallies by sophomore forward McKauly Tulloch to take a 2-0 lead at halftime. UCF never looked back, scoring three more times in the second stanza to put the game out of reach.
The Orange and Black didn't go quietly, however, scoring two goals of their own in the second half. Sophomore Ehjayson Henry scored his second goal of the season through the run of play and senior Ryan Young blasted home a free kick in the 84th minute for his first score of the 2011 campaign.
UCF's five goals scored is the most Mercer has allowed in a single game since the University of Pennsylvania put up six goals on the squad in 2008. However, the Bears are the first team to score more than one goal against the Knights this season as they had only allowed two goals over their first four games heading into Sunday's action.
Mercer is back in action next weekend when it welcomes Virginia Military Institute to Bear Field for a 7 p.m. kick-off.
