MACON, Ga. – After almost eight hours on the field as part of a doubleheader yesterday, the Mercer baseball team simply ran out of gas in an 8-1 loss to Stetson on Sunday afternoon at Claude Smith Field.
Mercer (17-12, 2-7 A-Sun) has now dropped five-straight weekend series after losing two-out-of-three to Stetson (18-9, 3-3 A-Sun) this weekend.
After the Bears scored first, thanks to an RBI single by junior Evan Boyd in the second inning, it would be all Stetson from that point forward.
The Hatters scored eight unanswered runs over the next six innings of play to put the game comfortably out of reach.
Stetson starting pitcher Will Dorsey looked strong throughout, benefiting from all the run support generated by his teammates. The senior right-hander ended up going seven innings and allowed just the one earned run on six hits to pick up the win.
Freshman Chesny Young was really the only Bears hitter who had any success in the contest, going 3-for-4 with a run scored in the loss.
Mercer is back on the field this Tuesday when it welcomes in-state rival Savannah State into town. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Claude Smith Field.
