Mercer Drops Heartbreaker at Jacksonville State in Final Non-Conference Match of the Season

GADSDEN, AL.—The Mercer men's tennis team dropped a 4-3 decision to Jacksonville State in its final non-conference match of the 2012 season Wednesday afternoon at the Gadsden Tennis Center.
With the loss, the Mercer drops to 4-12 on the campaign, while Jacksonville State improves its overall ledger to 10-12 on the season.
The Gamecocks started off the afternoon match by winning the doubles point, as Nenad Marcec and Axel Sundberg were able to best David Barton and Victor Dias at the No. 1 position, winning a hard-fought 9-8 (10-8) decision.
Igor Santos and Jordan Cowling were able to defeat Mercer's Pierre Tafelski and Peter Tauchner, 8-1 at the No. 2. The Bears would get some consolation in doubles, as Elbert Beekman and Vincent DeLise posted an 8-4 win at No. 3.
In singles play, Mercer would take points at the No. 1, No. 4 and No. 5 positions.
At the No. 1, Tafelski improved to 8-6 in singles play this season by defeating Santos, 6-3, 6-1.
DeLise posted his team-leading ninth win in singles play this season, improving to 9-7 overall, as he posted a 6-4, 7-6, (7-3) win over Cowling at the No. 4.
Dias would round out the points on the afternoon for the Bears, as he posted a, 6-1, 6-1 win over Felipe Wantabe.
With the Gamecocks leading 3-1, the match would ultimately be decided at the No. 6, as Wenzel topped Beekman, 6-0, 6-3. That win afforded the Gamecocks the insurmountable 4-1 advantage, before the Bears were able to pull two points back at the No. 5 and No. 4 positions, respectively, accounting for the final score line.
The men's tennis team will have little time to rest, as they return home for a pair of A-Sun regular-season matches to close out the season against Jacksonville and North Florida on Friday and Saturday. The Bears will take on the Dolphins in a match slated for 10 a.m. at the Leroy Peddy Tennis Center.
