HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – Desperate for a result with only two matches left in the 2013 Atlantic Sun Conference regular season, the Mercer men's soccer team came away with a huge 1-0 overtime win over Northern Kentucky on Saturday evening at the NKU Soccer Stadium.
With tonight's win, Mercer (4-13-1, 2-4-1 A-Sun) stops a three-match losing skid and slides in front of Jacksonville into the sixth and final spot in the 2013 A-Sun Championship field.
Northern Kentucky (8-4-6, 4-2-1 A-Sun) saw its six-match unbeaten streak come to end with the loss, which was its first home defeat of the entire 2013 season.
NKU out-shot Mercer 14-12, but it would be Mercer's 6-2 advantage in corner kicks that proved to be the difference.
After both teams battled to a 0-0 score through 90 minutes of regulation play, the Bears earned their sixth corner kick of the match just four minutes into the first overtime period. Senior Joey Heavner sent in the corner, which was settled by classmate Ryan King and laid off to senior Ehjayson Henry who buried his shot into the back of the net for the game-winning goal.
The goal was Henry's seventh of the season which ties three others for the most goals in a single-season by a Mercer player since Del Olaoye tallied 11 goals back in 2005.
Heavner's assist tonight was the 22nd of his career which brings the Landisville, Pa. native into a tie with Maxwell Rooke for the most assists in a career in Mercer program history.
Mercer is back in action on November 9 when it travels to Lipscomb for an 8 p.m. kick-off at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex.
