WILMINGTON, N.C. – Junior Caroline Carlton and sophomore Molly Locke combined for 27 kills, but their efforts were enough to stop the Mercer volleyball team from falling to UNC Asheville, 3-1 (25-19, 25-17, 19-25, 25-17) on Saturday at the UNC Wilmington Courtyard Classic.
Mercer's seventh-straight loss dropped the team to 1-8 on the year while UNC Asheville moved to 6-4 on the year.
Carlton registered her 13 kills on 28 attempts with only four errors for a team-high .321 hitting percentage. Locke paired 22 digs with her 14 kills for her team-leading third double-double of the year.
UNC Asheville registered hitting percentages of .278 and .343 in the opening two sets, but was limited to just a .178 attacking efficiency in the third frame. Mercer senior Emily Rochefort played a role in the improvement, notching eight of her 18 digs in during the stanza.
In the fourth set, the Bulldogs scored the first three points and never trailed en route to the deciding set win.
Mercer concludes play at the tournament against host UNC Wilmington tomorrow at 10:30 a.m.
