Bears Rally Comes Up Short in 3-1 Loss at No. 20 Memphis

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Mercer men's soccer team battled late, but eventually dropped a 3-1 decision at No. 20 Memphis on Tuesday evening at Miller Rose Stadium.
Mercer (1-7) drops to 0-3 against ranked teams this season, falling to No. 24 UNC Wilmington, No. 20 UAB and No. 20 Memphis (6-1-1) on Tuesday night.
After a scoreless first half, Memphis stepped on the gas offensively coming out of intermission. Goals by senior Shane Keely and junior Fakhry Khulfan made the score 2-0 Tigers mid-way through the second half.
Mercer cut the Tigers lead in half in the 72nd minute of play when sophomore David Murtaugh fired a shot that just evaded a charging Memphis goalkeeper to make the score 2-1. The goal for Murtaugh was his first of the 2013 campaign and third of his career.
The Bears last ditch rally was all for naught, however, as Memphis earned a penalty kick that was converted by senior Mark Sherrod in the 84th minute to make the final score 3-1.
Junior Greg Ranjitsingh tied his career-high with 10 saves in the loss. Ranjitsingh's 10 stops tonight against Memphis are the most in a single-game by an A-Sun Conference goalkeeper this season.
Mercer concludes its three-game road swing when it takes on Presbyterian on September 28. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at Edens Field.
