WILMINGTON, N.C. – The Mercer men's soccer team wrapped up play in the Hilton Garden Inn Classic with a 3-1 loss to host school UNC Wilmington on Sunday afternoon.
Mercer (0-3) went 0-2 in the Hilton Garden Inn Classic that was won by the Bears Friday night opponent Elon. Seniors Brady O'Brien and Ehjayson Henry were both named to the All-Tournament Team.
Things started badly for the Bears, as UNC Wilmington used first half goals by Mark Harris and Nathaniel Goodwin to take a 2-0 lead going into intermission.
The Bears tried to get back into it in the 71st minute of play, using one of their eight corner kicks on the afternoon. Sophomore David Murtaugh bent in a corner kick service that classmate James Walters headed home to cut the Seahawks lead to 2-1.
UNC Wilmington put the game out of reach in the final stages, however, when Jamie Dell scored on a breakaway opportunity in the 89th minute to make the final score 3-1.
Bears goalkeeper Greg Ranjitsingh made three saves in a losing effort.
Mercer finally comes back to Macon for its 2013 home opener when it plays Winthrop on Sept. 13 as part of the Mercer Tournament. Game time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Bear Field.
