MACON, Ga. – Mercer men's soccer senior Ashani Samuels was named to the Capital One Academic All-District IV first team as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) on Thursday.
To be eligible for the Academic All-District teams, student-athletes must be starters or important reserves with at least 3.30 cumulative grade point averages. Candidates also must complete at least one full academic year at the nominating institution and be at least sophomores athletically.
Samuels is one of just 11 players in the entire district to receive the honor and joins Furman's Sven Lissek as the only players in the Southern Conference to be voted onto the squad.
With the first team selection, Samuels is now eligible for Academic All-America honors, where first, second and third team honorees will be selected later this month.
This is Samuels' second time as an All-District honoree, having garnered the honor in 2012 as well. The West Moreland, Jamaica, native has started all 17 games for the Bears this season and tallied an assist against Wofford on Oct. 15. Samuels anchors a back line that has recorded a league-leading eight shutouts this season.
Samuels and the rest of the Bears will play for a chance to win the SoCon regular season title on Saturday, Nov. 1 at 8 p.m., when they host ETSU. Mercer will honor Samuels and fellow senior, Greg Ranjitsingh, in a short ceremony prior to the start of the match.
