STATESBORO, Ga. – The Mercer men's tennis team captured its first win over Georgia Southern since 2008 with a 4-2 triumph on Thursday afternoon at the Wallis Tennis Center.
Mercer improves its record to 6-12 on the season and has already surpassed its win total from all of last season with today's victory over the Eagles.
"We came out with great intensity and got off to a great start winning the doubles point," assistant coach Tim McLane said. "We were able to start out strong in singles play as well winning the first set in five of the six matches and did a good job of closing them out at the end."
For the third match in a row, Mercer was able to start the match by capturing the doubles point, using wins at No. 1 doubles by sophomores Oliver Snaider and Austin Emmet and No. 3 doubles by sophomore Anderson Scarpa and Joao Pagan to take an early 1-0 lead in the match.
Moving into singles play, Emmet started things off with a 7-5, 6-2 win at No. 6 singles over Georgia Southern's Christian Kerigan.
Following Snaider's 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 1 singles, sophomore Arnav Mohanty secured the match clinching point for Mercer with a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles.
Mercer is back in action on March 21 when it hosts Bradley at 2 p.m. at Stratford Academy.
