JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Playing in the postseason for the first time since the 2011 season, the Mercer men's tennis team fell to third-seeded Florida Gulf Coast 4-0 in the opening round of the 2014 Atlantic Sun Championship on Thursday afternoon at the UNF Tennis Complex.
Mercer finished the season with a 9-17 overall record, its most wins in a single-season since the 2011 edition of the Bears also racked up nine wins.
The Bears got off to a tough start in the match as the opening doubles point came down to the wire after both teams split the opening pair of matches. Following a win by FGCU at No. 1 doubles and a win by sophomore Anderson Scarpa and senior Joao Pagan at No. 3 doubles, the Eagles pulled out a 8-7 (4) triumph at No. 2 doubles to take an early 1-0 lead in the match.
FGCU seemed to seize the momentum from that point forward, using wins at No. 4 and No. 3 singles before A-Sun Men's Tennis Player of the Year Jordi Vives took down sophomore Oliver Snaider 6-3, 7-5 at No. 1 singles to clinch the match for the Eagles.
Mercer seems to have a bright future moving forward, however, as all six of its starting singles players will be back in the fold next season.
