Women's Soccer Spreads Offense Around to Defeat Alabama A&M, 7-0
8/31/2014 12:00:00 AM | Women's Soccer
MACON, Ga. – The Mercer women's soccer team used a well-balanced attack to defeat Alabama A&M, 7-0, on Sunday afternoon at Bear Field. Seven different Bears scored off of 37 shots, including 17 shots on goal.
"We knew today that we wanted to work on certain things from Friday's match," said Head Coach Tony Economopoulos," and I challenged the girls today to play a little quicker, pressing a little better and denying the other team a lot of penetrating passes. Overall, I'm pleased with the performance. I was happy we were able to get a lot of bodies on; everyone played tonight. We got everybody some quality game minutes, and some giels stepped up and scored some big goals for us."
Washida Blackman got things started for Mercer in the 10th minute, when she fired on to the right side of the net and put the Bears up 1-0. Tess Patton found the back of the net next for Mercer, off an assist from Maddie Clark in the 17th minute. Lauren Gassie scored 30 seconds laters, assisted by Stephanie Giangiuli and Tess Patton to stretch Mercer's lead to 3-0. Sydney Brogden rounded out the scoring in the first half, firing one in off an assist from Patton in the 23rd minute.
Haleigh Svede scored first for Mercer in the second stanza, putting the Bears up 5-0 off an unassisted shot in the 51st minute. Giangiuli scored off a free kick in the 62nd minute and Annie Barrett used a header in the 83rd minute to push the score to 7-0.
The Mercer defense held Alabama A&M to just seven shots and goalkeeper Maggie Cropp made four saves to keep the Bulldogs from taking advantage of their rare opportunities at goal.
Next up, the Bears hit the road to take on Georgia Southern on Friday, Sept. 5 at 7 p.m. in Statesboro, Ga. Mercer returns to Macon on Sunday, Sept 7 at 1 p.m. to host Houston.
