MACON, Ga. – The Mercer women's soccer team defeated Presbyterian, 2-1, on Sunday afternoon at Bear Field.
"I was proud of the girls today," said Head Coach Tony Economopoulos. "We came out a little flat and Presbyterian scored first, but we were able to come back and equalize it in the first half. We had some chances in the first half to take the lead, but unfortunately we didn't. I challenged the girls to come out in the second half with more energy, and we did and we got the second goal. I thought we had a couple of opportunities to score again and make it tougher for Presbyterian, but credit to them for hanging around until the end. Overall, I'm happy we got the win and that's two in a row."
The Blue Hose (2-3) took an early 1-0 lead in the third minute when Keri O'Neill slipped the ball past Cristina Mursuli just seconds after Mursuli knocked away a free kick from Presbyterian.
Mercer (4-3) tied the game, 1-1, in the sixth minute when Brianna Stampler found Lauren Gassie at the right corner of the box and Gassie scored from 15 yards out.
The Bears took the lead in the 65th minute off a second goal from Gassie. This time she was assisted from Washida Blackman and took the shot from the top center of the box and landed it in the left corner of the net.
Mursuli got the start between the pipes for Mercer, and made two saves in the first half. Maggie Cropp entered the goal for the second half and also made two saves for the Bears.
Next up, Mercer will travel to Atlanta to face Georgia State on Friday, Sept. 19 at 7 p.m. The Bears' next home game is on Sunday, Sept. 21 at 2 p.m. against USC-Aiken.
