
Mercer Splits Games at UCF to Close Florida Road Trip

ORLANDO, Fla. – The Mercer University softball team split a pair of games in midweek action at the University of Central Florida. Mercer defeated the University of South Dakota 5-0 in their first game of the day, before falling to #20 UCF 7-2 in the second game of the day.
Mercer 5, South Dakota 0
Mercer scored five runs on seven hits against the Coyotes. The Bears started the scoring in the first, adding another run in the third, before capping off the scoring with a three run fifth inning. The Bears offense was led by home runs from Riley Carter, Natalie Shiver, and Emma Andrew. Kirsten Stevens picked up her eleventh win, pitching her eleventh complete game of the year. Stevens allowed only three hits, while striking out six batters without giving up a base on balls.
UCF 7, Mercer 2
Mercer battled the #20 team in the country through all seven innings. Mercer scored in the first but UCF answered with two runs of their own. The Bears tied the game in the fifth but the score was short lived. The Knights added five runs in the fifth to take a 7-2 lead. Mercer was unable to close the deficit as UCF picked up their 19th win of the season.
The Bears scored two runs on six hits but produced three errors. Anna O'Neill was credited with her fifth loss of the year as she pitched four innings giving up seven runs. Carter and Rachael Hugghins both pitched one inning in relief. Taylor Rodgers produced her first home run of the season while Carter added the Bears other run of the game.
Mercer will be back in action on Friday, March 13th as they get set to host the Mercer Bears Classic. The Bears will face Youngstown St., Michigan St. and Alabama A&M over the course of the weekend.
