Bears Prep For Rematch At Georgia Southern On Wednesday

MACON – The Mercer softball team will close out a five-game road trip on Wednesday when the Bears load the bus and head to nearby Statesboro to take on Georgia Southern at the GS Softball Complex. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m.

Fans unable to make the trip to Statesboro can still follow all of the action for free via a live statistics link provided by the GSU athletics department. The game is also scheduled to be broadcast live by ESPN+.

LAST TIME OUT
Mercer got a game-tying solo homer from junior Olivia Lenzen in the second inning, and then took the lead for good on Avery Barton's 2-run single in the fourth, as the Bears salvaged their weekend series at Chattanooga with a 5-2 win over the Mocs in Sunday's series finale at Frost Stadium. The decision snapped a three-game skid for the Bears who also picked up their first win away from Macon this season as well.

ABOUT MERCER
Wednesday's outing in Statesboro will put a lid on the non-conference portion of the 2026 schedule for Mercer (16-20) who has already posted a dozen wins against out-of-conference foes this year, including a 5-3 win over Georgia Southern in Macon on February 18. The Bears have mustered a .274 team batting average against non-Southern Conference opponents and have hit 29 of their 39 home runs (74.3%) against such opponents as well. Junior Olivia Lenzen is carrying an impressive .414 batting clip against non-conference competition, while junior Daniella Monaco (.342) and sophomore Grace Jones (.316) are hitting above the .300 plateau in non-conference play.

SCOUTING GEORGIA SOUTHERN
The Eagles (17-20) have been victorious in five of their last seven games, but dropped the bookends of their home series with Sun Belt Conference foe Louisiana Monroe last weekend. Georgia Southern has registered nine or more hits 16 times this season, including 10 double-digit hit attacks, and will bring a .285 team batting average into Wednesday's contest. GSU has four hitters hitting at or above the .313 mark, including outfielder Emma Davis who boasts a team-best .371 batting average and 27 RBI. Infielder Delanie Thames shows the best power numbers, hitting .313 with 20 extra-base hits (9 HR), a team-high 36 RBI and 28 runs scored. Alana Barnard (6-9, 3.54 ERA) and Bailey Holland (6-9, 3.95) have each worked 79-2/3 innings pitched or more from the circle for the Eagles in 2026.

MERCER/GEORGIA SOUTHERN SERIES
Georgia Southern leads the all-time series, 53-20, but Mercer won both ends of the season series with the Eagles last season by 4-2 scores and raked in a 5-3 win over visiting GSU in February at Sikes Field. The Bears are just 4-18 against the Eagles at the GS Softball Complex, but snapped a two-game series road losing streak on their last trip to Statesboro on April 15, 2025.

ON DECK
Mercer will step back into Southern Conference play on Saturday and Sunday when the Bears suit up to take on Furman (6-30, 1-8 SoCon) in a three-game series at Sikes Field. The squads will open up the weekend with a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday and close out the series on Sunday with a 1 p.m. single dip. Admission to all three games is free.
