
Women's Lacrosse Falls to Detroit to Open A-Sun Play

DETROIT, Mich. – The Mercer women's lacrosse team opened Atlantic Sun play with a 15-8 loss to Detroit on Wednesday afternoon at Titan Field.
Erica Coyne led Mercer with three goals, while Kate Leone scored two goals and dished out two assists for a team-leading four points. Kate Christian also had two goals for Mercer and Tori Blakeman found the back of the net once, while Lindsey Zeltwanger dished out a pair of assists. Hannah Bair and Holly Berns each added an assist of their own for Mercer.
Meghan Segreti grabbed six draw controls, followed by Christian with a season-high five draw controls. Haleigh Wurzel and Marisa Agganis each dug up a team-high four ground balls on the afternoon. Wurzel also made 11 saves and allowed 15 goals in a full 60 minutes of play.
The Titans' offense came out strong to start the game, as Detroit (4-5, 1-0 A-Sun) took a 4-0 lead just over 10 minutes into the contest. Leone put Mercer on the board at 18:36, to make it 4-1. Detroit scored two more goals before the break and lead Mercer 6-1 at halftime.
The Bears (3-5, 0-1 A-Sun) scored three goals in the first 9:50 of the second period, unfortunately, the Titans also found the back of the net four times in that time frame to increase their advantage to 10-4. Coyne scored her third goal of the game with 14:09 left on the clock to make it 13-5 and notch her second-straight game with three or more goals.
Mercer outscored Detroit 3-2 in the final 11 minutes of the game, but the Titans were too far ahead for the Bears to catch up.
Mercer will wrap up its three-game road swing at Furman on Saturday, March 28. The opening draw is set for noon at Paladin Stadium.
