MACON, Ga. – The Mercer University men's soccer program made history on Monday, earning the highest ranking in program history in the NCAA Rating Percentage Index (RPI). The Bears, who have won five of their last six, are ranked 38th among NCAA Division I programs, as the NCAA released the initial rankings this afternoon.
The highest ranked team in the Southern Conference, Mercer leads three other league teams inside the RPI's Top-100 while being the only program to represent the state of Georgia in that exclusive group.
Mercer enters the week having put together three straight shutout victories, including a 1-0 win over Utah Valley, ranked 26th in the RPI rankings, which handed the Wolverines their first loss of the season. All three of the team's defeats have come against Top-30 programs, including road losses to No. 3 Clemson and No. 9 South Carolina.
The Bears' 2014 team was the first squad in program history to rank among the RPI's Top-100 teams, climbing as high as 80th after claiming the Southern Conference regular season title in their first season in the league.
Mercer opens its bid to repeat as SoCon champions tomorrow night against UNC-Greensboro with a 7 p.m. kick-off at UNCG Soccer Stadium.
